“Mauritius was made first, and then heaven and that heaven was copied after Mauritius.” This phrase quoted from Mark Twain has perfectly described the beauty of Mauritius, a unique island on the Indian Ocean that is multi-ethnic and multi-cultural. The Mauritius Independence Day was blissfully celebrated by APU staff and students, to commemorate the nation’s independence from the British colonization on 12th March 1968. With great honor, Mr Vlkash Neethalia, from the Mauritius Embassy, has celebrated this event together with his family, as well as the entire APU Community.
The Mauritian Community planned it all which made the event a huge success. A Mauritian booth was set up on the eve of the event where Mauritian delicacies including Samoussas, Barfis, Croquettes, Cupcakes, Alouda among others prepared by our students were on sale giving the opportunity for students from all over the world to have a taste of Mauritius. They also applied henna on hands for students who were interested.
On the eventful night, Sega dance and music, the most popular dance and music in Mauritius, have been performed. The joyful rhythm of the music has spread the joy and happiness of celebrations among the audience, who were present at the APU Foyer. Other performances such as drama on the independence of Mauritius and abolition of slavery, Tamil dances, Chinese Diabolo performances, Western dances and Break dances were performed on stage as well. The huge amount of variety of interesting performances had encouraged high attendance as well as never-ending claps and cheers from the crowd of staff and students.
