As part of the #bemyprotector campaign, Change Your World, a non-profit organisation (NGO) that engages and empowers youth to explore important issues, organised a roadshow on Tuesday, 28 April 2015 at the APU Campus @ TPM to raise awareness on human trafficking issues that are arising in Malaysia.
#BeMyProtector is 3-month awareness raising campaign co-organised by YB Hannah Yeoh, YB Yeo Bee Yin and Ng Sze Han as well as Tenaganita. It is a one-of-its-kind interactive awareness event, in which dance and special presentations were demonstrated during the event. An interactive TRAPPED experience that was presented simulated the “trapped” feelings of victims of human trafficking, in order to raise the awareness even further.
At the roadshow, students and staff were required to complete 3 simple actions (SAVE, SHOOT, SHARE), in order to show their support towards the campaign. They were encouraged to SAVE Tenaganita’s Hotline - 0123350512, and to report any suspicious activities related to human trafficking. Besides, wristbands were given to the community, in which students and staff were encouraged to SHOOT a picture of them with the wristband, and to SHARE the photo via social media with the hashtag, #BeMyProtector.
Malaysia has become one of the worst hubs of human trafficking in the world, and has been downgraded to Tier 3 in the Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report issued by the US State Department in June 2014. According to The Rakyat Post, Malaysian children were found sex trafficked to Thailand, Indonesia and Taiwan. More than 5,000 children from the Klang Valley were found as sex trafficking victims up to date. For more details about the roadshow and the campaign, please visit: http://bemyprotector.com/.
