APU’s CREDIT Teams Showcase IoT Excellence with Multiple Wins at ICAN 2023


By sending four different teams to compete in the most recent International Invention Innovation Competition (ICAN 2023), held on the 26th of August 2023 in Toronto, Canada, APU’s Centre of Research and Development for IoT (CREDIT) secured a total of 11 awards from various countries and associations participating in the competition.

Each of these teams was formed with a mix of academics, tutors and students from the Centre.

The CREDIT Team: Fresh Fruit Bunch (FFB) Harvest Detection Drone for Palm Plantation, consisting of members Dipl-Ing. Ir. Narendran Ramasenderan, Cajun Tai Ka Joon, Trishah Rajendran, and Krishna Ravinchandra, built a drone that flies in the oil palm plantation and detects the fruits and their ripeness using AI intelligence. This project earned them Canadian Special Awards of Excellence from the Inventors Circle Innovation Initiative, the National Association for Science and Research (NASR) Award from Lebanon, and finally, the Certificate of Award – Silver Award.

The second team, CREDIT Team: RescueAI – Disaster Metaverse with Robotic Autonomy, comprised members Dipl-Ing. Ir. Narendran Ramasenderan, Prof. Ir. Eur. Ing. Ts. Dr. Vinesh Thiruchelvam, Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Siva Kumar Sivanesan, Ng Joo Kiat, and Cheng Yi Heng. This team presented a project that can identify the possibilities of a natural disaster and provide information and aid through their app and drones. The project received the Certificate of Award – Gold Award, FIRI Award for Best Invention, and Certificate Of Award – Top 20 Best Invention Award.

The third team, CREDIT Alzhiemex: Light Therapy and Gamification for Alzheimer's, consisted of Dipl-Ing. Ir. Narendran Ramasenderan, Rohit Thomas, Ir. Ts. Dr. Yvette Shaan-Li Susiapan, and Ir. Ts. Dr. Alexander Chee Hon Cheong. They presented a project where a prototype was designed to provide light therapy to patients and track the severity of the patient through a gamification approach. The team secured a Diploma Special Award, Organisation for Creativity, Innovation, and Invention Promotion (OCIIP) Special Award, and also the Certificate of Award – Silver Award.

The final team from CREDIT was MaviHub: Machine Vision with Robotic Autonomy, with members Dipl-Ing. Ir. Narendran Ramasenderan, Prof. Ir. Eur. Ing. Ts. Dr. Vinesh Thiruchelvam, Dr. Sathish Kumar Selva Perumal, Arvin Ravindran, and Sharen Chrisan Fabian Perera. By demonstrating their project prototype that uses a 5G FOG AI-based machine vision solution incorporating an industrial metaverse to tackle quality assurance and Health, Safety, Security, and the environment in the manufacturing industry, the team received a Certificate of Award – Gold Medal and Certificate of Award – Jury’s Choice Award.
