A Sustainable Model Aligned with the UN SDGs
The Student Chapter of the Integrated Sustainability & Urban Creativity Centre (ISUC) at Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) took a significant step towards addressing global sustainability goals by organising the "Food Waste into Cash" event.
Aligned with the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 17: Partnerships to achieve the Goal, the event brought together diverse stakeholders committed to making a positive impact.
ISUC partnered with HcBites Creative Solutions, Soroptimist International Club of Shah Alam, and The Lost Food Project (TLFP) to create a collaborative platform for sustainable action, thanks to the proactive efforts of ISUC Student Chapter Advisor and the organising executive committee, Ms. Cynthia Paul.
Ms. Wong May Chew of HcBites Creative Solutions and Ms. Azlinza Hashim from the Soroptimist International Club of Shah Alam played instrumental roles in facilitating the event.
The highlight of the day was a transformative cooking session led by Master Chef Ms. Wong May Chew. 15 students (aged 13 to 15) from the Tuanku Bainun Children's Creative Center (PKKTB), were guided to convert oversupplied and overripe vegetables and fruits into jams and pickles.
Beyond the culinary aspect, the event served as a powerful vehicle for community engagement, aligning with UN SDG 8 - Decent Work And Economic Growth.
"Food Waste into Cash" not only equipped children with valuable skills and knowledge but also created entrepreneurial opportunities for the broader community. This initiative embodies sustainability at its core, raising awareness about the transformation of food waste into a valuable resource.
Dr. Stephen Poon Tai Fook, Head of the Research Center of ISUC, and members of the ISUC student chapter committee, including Khoo Lay Yang, Sai Htoo Myat Naing, Hassan Massod, and Adiba Chowdhury, were also present at the event, emphasising the importance of collective efforts towards a sustainable future.
ISUC@APU remains committed to celebrating such events in the future, furthering its mission of fostering positive change in the community and beyond.
