APU fostering Active Environment & Social Consciousness

In an inspiring celebration of World Environment Day, Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) students, in collaboration with Sustainability Future Fusion (SFF), organised an enriching event featuring the active participation of refugee children from Yayasan Chow Kit on 13th June 2024.

This special day, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 13 (SDG 13), underscored the critical importance of fostering environmental consciousness and actively engaging with the community to address climate change and promote sustainability.

Inspiring Seminar on Environmental Consciousness

The event commenced with an insightful seminar moderated by Ms Cynthia Mala Paul Dorairaj (Lecturer and Advisor of SFF, School of Business at APU), setting the tone for a day focused on environmental consciousness.

The seminar, centred on the theme of sustainability, featured keynote speakers Neal Edwin and Nigel Edwin, the twin driving forces behind Rent-A-Pot (RAP).

Their engaging and thought-provoking discussion deeply explored the principles of sustainable living, emphasising the crucial importance of environmental stewardship, and offered practical insights on how individuals and communities can contribute to a more sustainable future.

The speakers’ passion and expertise captivated the audience, inspiring them to actively participate in the conversation and fostering a sense of collective responsibility and enthusiasm for environmental initiatives.

Hands-On Workshop with Refugee Children

Following the seminar, APU students collaborated with the refugee children in a dynamic, hands-on workshop aimed at promoting practical environmentalism by focusing on creative and sustainable methods to repurpose everyday items into eco-friendly creations.

The children were taught how to create terrariums using plastic bottles, transforming discarded materials into beautiful, self-sustaining ecosystems.

They also learned to craft coasters from old t-shirts, underscoring the value of recycling and the imaginative potential in reducing waste.

Through these activities, the workshop highlighted the importance of environmental stewardship while providing a fun and educational experience for all.

Creative Posters Promoting Environmental Awareness

APU students further elevated the event with visually compelling posters that highlighted various environmental and SDG issues, showcasing innovative technological solutions and serving as powerful tools for raising awareness and inspiring proactive action toward a sustainable future.

Environmental Awareness Booths

Environmental awareness booths prominently featured at the event showcased a commitment to promoting effective environmental strategies and raising awareness about pollution’s detrimental effects.

These informative platforms engaged the attendees with educational materials and interactive displays, emphasising the urgent need for proactive environmental conservation.

Looking towards a Greener Future

Ms Cynthia emphasised that the collaborative efforts of APU students and SFF members ensured that the refugee children not only enjoyed the fun and educational experience but also took home valuable lessons on sustainability.

“This event demonstrated that environmental consciousness transcends boundaries, fostering a unified sense of community and shared responsibility, by reminding us that every individual plays a vital part in creating a sustainable future.”
