The Merdeka Fiesta 2024, a celebration of unity and diversity, brought an electrifying atmosphere to the vibrant campus of Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) on 24th August 2024.
Organised by Sekretariat Rukun Negara of APU, this year’s event has drawn together a vibrant crowd, eager to celebrate Malaysia’s independence in the spirit of togetherness.
Gracing the event was YB Senator Saraswathy Kandasami, Deputy Minister of National Unity of Malaysia, whose presence underscored the importance of the ongoing partnership between Sekretariat Rukun Negara of APU and the Department of National Unity and National Integration (JPNIN).
She highlighted the significance of events like this in showcasing the strength of the nation’s diversity.
Furthermore, she emphasised that by celebrating differences through such vibrant and inclusive events, a future is paved where mutual respect and understanding are the foundation of unity.
Sekretariat Rukun Negara (SRN), operating under JPNIN within the Ministry of National Unity (KPN), plays a crucial role in promoting the principles of the Rukun Negara, and this event has been a powerful demonstration of their efforts to bring everyone together.
The day began on a high note with the 5 KM APU Merdeka Fiesta Unity Run, where participants from various backgrounds ran side by side, embodying the essence of unity that is at the heart of Malaysia’s identity.
The Unity Run was more than just a race; it was a powerful symbol of the shared values, enduring spirit, and collective identity that unite us as a diverse and harmonious nation.
As the day progressed, attendees were treated to the APU Merdeka Unity Concert, a dynamic showcase of live performances that highlighted Malaysia’s rich cultural diversity.
The Unity Concert brought together performers from various ethnicities and backgrounds, reflecting APU’s commitment to celebrating and embracing diversity within its community.
Throughout the day, the APU Merdeka Food Fiesta has been a culinary highlight, offering a wide array of local and international cuisines that represent Malaysia’s multicultural heritage.
Attendees enjoyed not only the rich array of local delicacies but also a diverse selection of global flavours, further underscoring the vibrant multiculturalism and interconnectedness that beautifully define modern Malaysia.
Datuk Parmjit Singh (Chief Executive Officer of APU) stressed that this event marks a significant milestone in the journey of friendship, cooperation, unity, and inclusivity that Malaysia is renowned for and what APU fosters among staff and students.
He highlighted that these values are fundamental in shaping a collaborative and supportive environment, where each individual’s contribution is valued and encourages mutual respect and understanding.
“By encouraging more students to engage with these core values, the importance of active participation in fostering a supportive and inclusive community is reinforced as well.”
The Merdeka Fiesta 2024 is not merely a commemoration of Malaysia’s independence; it is also a profound reaffirmation of APU’s unwavering commitment to fostering a vibrant global community.
APU’s diverse student body, representing over 130 countries, serves as a living testament to how unity in diversity can be successfully achieved and celebrated.
