APU’s Computing Students Dive into Digital Transformation at MDEC

On July 18, 2024, a group of approximately 40 students from the School of Computing (SoC) at Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) embarked on an enlightening field visit to the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) in Cyberjaya.

The visit was led by Assistant Professor Ts Dr Maythem Kamal Abbas Al-Adilee and aimed to provide students with a firsthand look at the intersection of academia and industry in the rapidly advancing Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector.

This initiative is part of SoC’s ongoing commitment to bridging the gap between academic learning and real-world industry practices. According to Dr Maythem, the visit was carefully curated to achieve specific learning objectives.

“Our interest in MDEC stemmed from its renowned expertise in Digital Technology. As a leader in the field, MDEC's work in Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence (AI) Applications represents the cutting edge of technology—a fitting platform for our students to learn and grow,” he explained.

The students were welcomed at MDEC’s Bunga Raya Auditorium, where they were introduced to the company’s pivotal role in shaping Malaysia’s digital economy. The visit featured a series of insightful presentations focused on Digital Transformation and AI Applications, showcasing how these technologies are implemented in real-world scenarios.

Reflecting on the experience, SoC students highlighted several key takeaways:

Practical Insights:

“We learned how Digital Transformation is driving change across various industries and how AI is being leveraged to solve complex challenges.”

Industry Trends:

“The session highlighted the latest trends in the ICT sector, providing us with up-to-date knowledge that will enhance our academic and professional pursuits.”

Networking Opportunities:

“We had the chance to interact with MDEC professionals, gaining career advice and exploring potential pathways in the digital economy.”

The visit to MDEC proved to be an invaluable experience, reinforcing the importance of industry exposure in preparing students for their future careers. Through such initiatives, the School of Computing continues to equip its students with the knowledge and skills necessary to thrive in an increasingly digital world.
