Exploring Global Finance Through a Visit to Bursa Malaysia

On September 3, 2024, 31 students from the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in International Business Management and Master of Business Administration (MBA) programmes embarked on an eye-opening visit to Bursa Malaysia, the stock exchange and regulator of the Malaysian capital market.

Led by Associate Professor Dr Ibiwani Alisa Hussain and Senior Lecturer Ts Dr Noraini Ahmad from the School of Business (SoB), the visit aimed to expose students to real-world financial operations and provide a deeper understanding of the stock exchange and international trading.

The visit began at the Bursa Malaysia Knowledge Centre, where students received a comprehensive overview of the exchange’s history, structure, and pivotal role in both the Malaysian and global financial markets. This interactive session introduced students to the workings of equity, bond, and derivatives trading, while also emphasising the importance of corporate governance and transparency in maintaining market integrity.

A significant highlight of the visit was a detailed briefing on investment fraud. Students learned about common fraudulent schemes, including Ponzi schemes, insider trading, and pump-and-dump scams. This session underscored the importance of due diligence and regulatory compliance, empowering students to identify and avoid fraudulent practices in their future professional endeavours.

Students also delved into international trading strategies, covering cross-border trading mechanics, the influence of foreign investors, and the impact of global economic events on local stock markets. This briefing illuminated the intricacies of global trading and the crucial role Bursa Malaysia plays in facilitating international investments.

The industrial visit provided invaluable first-hand insights into the operations of a major stock exchange and its influence on both domestic and international financial systems. For the students, it was a transformative experience, enriching their understanding of global finance and equipping them with practical knowledge to apply in their future careers.

"This visit to Bursa Malaysia has been a pivotal learning opportunity for our students, offering them practical exposure to the complexities of the financial markets. It is crucial for future business leaders to grasp how international trading works and understand the importance of regulatory compliance in shaping a fair and transparent financial ecosystem,” said Assoc Prof Dr Ibiwani Alisa Hussain.
