APU’s Actuarial Science Students Explore Future Paths with Etiqa
Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation’s (APU) Actuarial Science Club (ASC) organised an insightful industrial visit to Etiqa Insurance and Takaful, part of the Maybank Group, under the theme “Etiqa Insight: Exploring the Future of Insurance”.
Fifty members, including ten committee members, accompanied by Mr Lee Chee Nian and Mr Nicholas Yong Jia Wei, lecturers from the School of Mathematics, Actuarial, and Quantitative Studies (SoMAQ), participated in this visit, which took place on 18th October 2024. The visit aimed to bridge academic learning with real-world industry exposure and featured discussions on career pathways and firsthand perspectives on life in the insurance sector.
The visit opened with an introduction to Etiqa’s internship and graduate programmes—GMAT and PROTÉGÉ—by Ms Rozima Yahya, Human Capital Director at Etiqa Insurance and Takaful. This segment provided students, who are currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Actuarial Studies at APU, with valuable insights into pathways available for their professional development.
This was followed by a highly engaging sharing session led by Mr Kamaludin Ahmad, Group Chief Executive Officer of Etiqa Insurance & Takaful and CEO of Etiqa Life Insurance Berhad, where he highlighted key industry trends and career advice for young professionals. Additionally, four Etiqa team members with actuarial backgrounds—Mr Mohamad Asraf, Ms Bahariah, Mr Andi, and Ms Alyn Shahirah—shared their unique experiences in various divisions at Etiqa, covering essential career insights, professional life lessons, and tips on navigating workplace challenges.
Participants gained valuable perspectives on transitioning from academic life to professional careers, which will be instrumental as they prepare for internships and future roles in the field.
The event concluded with a tour of Etiqa’s recreational facilities, including a gym, boxing room, and snooker table, offering participants a glimpse into Etiqa’s focus on work-life balance. Before departure, refreshments and a Q&A session provided further opportunities for students to connect with industry professionals and gather detailed information about Etiqa’s culture and career opportunities.
