The School of Mathematics, Actuarial and Quantitative Studies (SoMAQS) at Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) strengthened its presence on the international actuarial education stage through its participation in the CAS Teaching Summit 2026, held in Bangkok, Thailand, on 21 and 22 May 2026.
Organised by the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS), a leading professional organisation that educates, credentials, and represents actuaries specialising in property and casualty (P&C) risks, the summit brought together academics and industry leaders from across Asia for meaningful discussions, knowledge exchange, networking, and collaboration.
Representing APU at the summit were Associate Professor Dr Rajasegeran Ramasamy, Head of SoMAQS, alongside actuarial studies academics Dr Ang Chiew Way and Ms Zawatil Isyqi Mokhtar.
The delegation participated in a series of interactive and immersive sessions designed to facilitate the sharing of teaching practices, discussion of common challenges, and co-development of strategies to strengthen general insurance education throughout the region.
The summit explored several key themes shaping the future of actuarial education, including the integration of artificial intelligence in teaching and learning, climate resilience, emerging risks, academic research opportunities, student preparedness for professional examinations and careers, as well as evolving industry hiring expectations.
These discussions provided valuable insights into ensuring actuarial education remains aligned with the rapidly changing needs of the profession.
A key highlight of APU’s participation was the presentation of two internationally recognised teaching case studies that had previously earned accolades in the CAS Global Case Study Creation Challenge.
The first case study, titled “Detecting and Profiling Potential Motor Insurance Fraud”, was presented by Ms Zawatil Isyqi Mokhtar. The study was co-authored by Ms Zawatil and Ms Nur Annisa Ezzaty, both lecturers from SoMAQS, in collaboration with Ms Ritika from Accenture, India.
Awarded Third Place in the global competition, the case study demonstrates how actuarial and analytical techniques can be applied to detect and profile motor insurance fraud. By incorporating real-world industry challenges into the classroom, the study provides students with valuable exposure to practical problem-solving and data-driven decision-making.
The second award-winning case study, “Modelling Malaysian Flood Risk Using CAT Techniques: A Teaching Case in Climate Risk Analytics”, was presented by Dr Ang Chiew Way. Authored by Mr Ong Li Kee and Ms Caryn Chuah, both academics from SoMAQS, the study also secured Third Place recognition in the competition.
The case examines the application of catastrophe (CAT) modelling techniques in assessing flood risks within the Malaysian context. It highlights the growing importance of climate-related risks in actuarial practice and equips students with relevant analytical skills to address emerging industry challenges.
Together, these achievements underscore APU’s commitment to delivering industry-relevant and applied actuarial education while enhancing the University's international visibility within the global actuarial community.
Reflecting on the achievement, Assoc Prof Dr Rajasegeran said, “The recognition received by our faculty members reflects their dedication to developing innovative and impactful teaching resources that bridge academic learning with real-world industry challenges.”
“I am proud of the team's commitment to advancing actuarial education and creating meaningful learning experiences that prepare our students to thrive in an evolving global insurance landscape. These accomplishments further reinforce APU’s standing as a university that values academic excellence, industry relevance, and international engagement,” concluded Assoc Prof Dr Rajasegeran.
