Beyond the Classroom APU Students Turn Compassion into Community Action

From preparing 2,000 meals for vulnerable communities to supporting animal welfare and raising RM10,000 for shelters, APU students demonstrate that meaningful education extends beyond academic achievement.

For students at Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU), education is not measured solely by examination results or professional qualifications. It is equally about developing empathy, integrity and a sense of responsibility towards society.

Throughout September 2026, APU’s Community Engagement (ACE) team translated these values into action through charitable initiatives addressing food insecurity and animal welfare. Beyond providing practical assistance, the activities encouraged students to recognise community needs and discover how individual contributions can make a collective difference.

Serving 2,000 Meals, Sharing One Purpose

On 12 September, APU student volunteers rolled up their sleeves at Brahmarpanam Soup Kitchen, helping prepare and distribute 2,000 meal portions for underprivileged communities.

From chopping vegetables and cooking to packing meals for distribution, students worked alongside the kitchen crew, experiencing firsthand the coordination, dedication and teamwork required to feed people in need.

Preparing 2,000 meals is no easy task, but APU student volunteers rose to the challenge, lending a helping hand to the kitchen crew.

For Kimberly Gina Pereira, a Year 2 Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in International Business Management student, the experience brought a deeper appreciation of community service.

“It was a really nice experience to assist the kitchen crew and help lighten their workload for the day. Preparing food for 2,000 people is definitely not an easy task, so I’m glad we could lend a hand.”

The initiative supported United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2: Zero Hunger, while reminding students that compassion becomes meaningful when accompanied by action.

Extending Compassion to Animal Welfare

As World Animal Day on 4 October approached, ACE broadened its outreach to animals requiring care and protection.

On 19 September, students visited My Pets Haven Animal Shelter, assisting its elderly owner with housekeeping duties and contributing a monetary donation towards the shelter’s operational needs.

The commitment continued on 25 and 26 September, when 40 students volunteered for SPCA Selangor’s Potong Royong Programme, which provides free spaying services to pet owners from underprivileged communities.

Students assisted with animal handling and supported veterinary personnel, gaining insights into responsible pet ownership, animal population management and the challenges faced by welfare organisations.

Regular ACE volunteer Jorryn Loo Hwee Ying, a Bachelor in Digital Marketing (Honours) student, reflected:

“Participating in events like Potong Royong is a great experience as we get to see the behind-the-scenes of veterinary work, lend a helping hand, and learn something new along the way.”

RM10,000 Raised, Three Shelters Supported

Complementing their hands-on involvement, ACE students raised RM10,000 through fundraising activities to support SPCA Selangor, My Pets Haven and Furrykids Safehaven.

A mock cheque was presented to Mr Kelvin Cheah, General Manager of SPCA Selangor, on behalf of the three beneficiary shelters.

These efforts aligned with SDG 15: Life on Land and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, highlighting the importance of biodiversity protection, animal welfare and community collaboration.

Nurturing Graduates with Knowledge and Character

Ms Abbhirami Sivarajan, ACE Adviser and Lecturer at APU’s School of Business (SoB), emphasised the educational value of direct community involvement.

“These experiences allow students to learn beyond the university environment. By working directly with the organisations, they get a better idea of the needs on the ground and how they can contribute.”

Through its continuing ESG- and SDG-aligned initiatives, APU reinforces its commitment to holistic education, nurturing graduates who possess not only professional competence but also compassion, social awareness and the willingness to serve.

Ultimately, the most enduring lesson is simple: knowledge empowers individuals, but character inspires them to make a difference.
