Recently, the Strategic Research Institute (SRI) and School of Foundation (SoF) at Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) organised a workshop titled “Speak with Purpose and Confidence: High-Impact Presentations.”

APU 2 (Speak with Purpose and Confidence)
Coordinated by Prof Dr Falahat Nejadmahani (Director, SRI at APU) and Ms Sharenjit Kaur (Lecturer, SoF at APU), with the support of Professor Ts Dr Murali Raman, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of APU, the workshop focused on equipping researchers and academics with practical techniques for delivering engaging, authentic, and memorable presentations.

APU 3 (Speak with Purpose and Confidence)
The workshop was conducted by Ms Sharenjit Kaur (Lecturer, SoF at APU), who brings extensive corporate training experience; introducing participants to techniques commonly associated with TED-style storytelling and keynote presentations, while encouraging them to develop their own distinctive communication styles.

First Session: Understanding the Foundations of High-Impact Presentations

APU 4 (Speak with Purpose and Confidence)
The workshop began with Ms Sharenjit Kaur (Lecturer, SoF at APU) guiding participants through the principles behind effective presentation and keynote delivery, encouraging them to move beyond the conventional approach of simply presenting information.

Participants explored how strong speakers establish presence from the opening moments, communicate a clear central message, and create meaningful connections with their audiences.

The session also examined how storytelling, pacing, verbal and non-verbal communication, authenticity, and purposeful delivery contribute to how effectively an idea is received and remembered.

Through these discussions, participants considered how complex research and professional expertise can be transformed into clear and engaging narratives that resonate with diverse audiences, while learning how effective presentation techniques can help sustain audience attention and make key messages more memorable.

Second Session: Reflecting on Personal Strengths

APU 5 (Speak with Purpose and Confidence)
Following the exploration of effective presentation techniques, Ms Sharenjit Kaur (Lecturer, SoF at APU) then lead participants through a reflective mirror activity designed to help them recognise the personal qualities they bring to the stage.

Through the activity, participants reflected on their individual strengths, experiences, and personal qualities; considering how these attributes shape their communication styles and influence the way they connect with an audience.

Also, the activity emphasised the importance of authenticity, highlighting how speakers can build confidence by understanding and embracing their own distinctive voices, rather than following a fixed presentation style or imitating others.

By reflecting on their personal qualities and experiences, participants gained greater awareness of how personal conviction and authenticity can strengthen their presentation presence and create more meaningful connections with audiences.

Third Session: Enhancing Presentation Skills

APU 6 (Speak with Purpose and Confidence)
Following the reflective activity, Ms Sharenjit Kaur (Lecturer, SoF at APU) engaged participants in a series of practical exercises, including an interactive activity where participants had a paper pasted on their backs, while others wrote positive attributes, strengths, and constructive feedback; encouraging reflection, appreciation, and connection.

The interactive exercises provided opportunities for participants to exchange perspectives, test new approaches, and reflect on how their existing presentation styles could be further developed.

The session further reinforced the qualities that contribute to memorable presentations, including clarity of purpose, intentional delivery, confidence, and an awareness of the audience’s needs and expectations.
