Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) student Eshwar Evan Dmitry Klokol delivered an outstanding performance at the 2026 Asian Sub-Junior & Junior Powerlifting Championships in Hainan, China, winning two gold medals and securing the overall Men’s Classic 93kg Sub-Junior title.

Held on 10 May 2026, the championship brought together competitors from China, Chinese Taipei, India, Russia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Uzbekistan.

Competing against some of Asia’s strongest young athletes, Eshwar won gold for the deadlift, where he recorded the heaviest lift in both his weight category and across the entire Junior division, before securing another gold medal for achieving the highest overall total in his category.

He also received a participation medal, with his combined performance earning him first place overall.

Despite the highly competitive field, Eshwar finished with a combined total of 672.5kg, narrowly ahead of Russia’s Aleksei Terin (667.5kg) and Singapore’s Aiden Choy (662.5kg).

His winning lifts included a 245kg squat, 137.5kg bench press, and a remarkable 290kg deadlift.

What made the accomplishment even more remarkable was that Eshwar competed as a self-funded athlete while balancing the demands of full-time university studies with elite-level training.

As a Software Engineering student at the APU, Eshwar said the University’s support had played an important role in helping him balance both academic and sporting commitments.

Looking ahead, Eshwar said he planned to take an extended off-season to recover before preparing for the highly competitive Junior (Under-23) and Open categories.

“My goal is to recover properly, build back up and prepare for the Junior and Open divisions. I will be competing against much more experienced lifters, but I want to remain highly competitive and continue improving.”

Eshwar’s dedication has also earned him significant international recognition. He is currently ranked among the Top 17 powerlifters in the world in the boys’ U18 age group by total lift, having climbed 11 places from 28th last year to 17th this year in the broader Under-18 men’s category.

He has also made history by becoming an official Malaysian National Record Holder in powerlifting.
