Celebrating Success in The Penang International Invention, Innovation and Design 2021 (PIID 2021)

Two APU teams celebrated success at the Penang International Invention, Innovation and Design 2021 (PIID 2021) walking away with a Gold and a Silver Medal for their innovative ideas. The virtual challenge was an annual effort organised by the Research Management Unit, UiTM Penang to serve as a platform for academicians, industries, and students to highlight innovation, invention, and ideas which is in line with the government’s policy to encourage research activities in Malaysia.

At the PIID competition, teams are required to discover new development and scientific advancement that will impact the digital transformation, hence, the theme for this year revolved around ‘Engaging and Empowering Mankind Towards Scientific Revolution’.

APU team which comprises Nur Sarah Adha Binti Adam, majoring in Computer Science, and Sonia Siow Yi Ai, specialising in Software Engineering attained Gold Metal under the ‘University Student Category’. Their project was targeted at the elderly audience who suffered from Alzheimer’s, a logical gaming application was created using Picnogram to ease and further prevent the deterioration of memories and other cognitive abilities that would interfere with their daily life.

Nurl Anisah Salleh on the other hand emerged with her creation of an Augmented Reality for Malaysian Secondary History Curriculum which has earned herself a Silver Medal. Both teams were under the mentorship of Ts. Dr. Vinothini Kasinathan and Ms. Aida Zamnah Zainal Abidin from the School of Computing.

Their participation in the finals was an eye-opening experience; as over 392 local and international participants were competing in their respective categories which include School Students, University Students, Academicians, and Industry Players. Apart from demonstrating their creative ideas and presentation skills, their innovative solutions are able to contribute to the resolvent to many problems in the respective sector which have impressed the panel of judges.

It is also worth highlighting that all three of our students have already embarked onto their professional journey to the industry in their respective careers. Congratulations to the teams for their outstanding performance and Kudos to School of Computing for their dedication and effort in leading the team towards success.
