Where Technology Meets Artistry

Over 80 students from 17 programmes under SoC and SoT fused technology and art at the Bridging the Gap Between Technology and Artistry Final Year Project (FYP) Showcase 2024.

Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) School of Computing (SoC) and School of Technology (SoT) recently collaborated on an outstanding Final Year Project (FYP) Showcase on 17 January 2024.

Over 80 final-year students from 17 programmes under SoC and SoT, transformed the APU Walkway and Atrium into a vibrant canvas of innovation, showcasing their projects under the captivating theme: ‘Bridging the Gap Between Technology and Artistry’.

Forget the usual tech showcases. This SoC and SoT FYP showcase allows young inventors to showcase their talents while combining cutting-edge technology with stunning visuals, engaging characters, and immersive environments, showing that the future of technology and creativity is exciting.

Ms. Rizawati Rohizan and her team — Dr. Dewi Octaviani, Ms. Palvinderjit Kaur, Mr. Dhason Padmakumar, Ts. Umapathy Eaganathan, Ms. Aida Zamnah Zainal Abidin, Mr. Daniel Mago Vistro, and Mr. Jacob Sow Tian You — spearheaded the FYP Showcase, an event that went beyond a mere presentation; it was a fusion of creativity where algorithms, and brushstrokes all came together.

APU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Ho Chin Kuan kicked off the event, setting the stage for an intellectual event fuelled by passion and judged by experts, with a group of recognised external and internal panels holding the reins of judgement.

The external panel from the world of technology and art including figures such as Mr. Havene Liew (XR Associates), Mr. Jeremy Raj (CodeMe Pro (M) Sdn. Bhd.), Ts. Eric Lee Jian Aun (LeadAlways Technology (M) Sdn. Bhd.), Mr. Terran Loh Wei Yang (LifeTech Group), Mr. Mohammed Afsal (Robomy Sdn. Bhd.), Mr. P. Srinivasa Rao (AIA Bhd.), Mr. Joco Tan (EC- Council Global Services), Dr. Meisam Eslahi (EC- Council Global Services), Mr. Abdul Hanan Ismail (Kelembai Solutions & Resources), Mr. Brian Goh (BP Business Service Center Asia Sdn. Bhd.), and Ms. Norah Khor Hui Yi (Quurk Sdn. Bhd.).

The internal panel comprises SoC and SoT lecturers, including Assoc. Prof. Dr. Thang Ka Fei, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ehsan Rana, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Shahrinaz Ismail, Dr. Preethi Subramanian, Dr. Julia Juremi, Dr. Kohila Malar Kalesamy, Dr. Seyedmostafa Safavi, Ts. Dr. Siti Azreena Mubin, Mr. Au Yit Wah, Mr. Naresh Kumar Appadurai, and Mr. Jeffery Jeselee Sijore.

The panellist’ diverse perspectives ensure thorough and insightful examination of each project to determine the winners of the Best FYP and Best Poster Design Awards.

Each project demonstrated the unlimited possibilities of human ingenuity. For example, Wong Zi Xuan’s project Calmpaws VR aims to improve mental health by developing an immersive virtual reality companion pet application.

Mariyln Tan Shiaw Hiu’s AI-Powered File Checker and Analyser make a smart checker and analyser built with multiple machine learning models to develop state-of-the-art techniques.

Abdel Rahman Fathalla Ismail Taher Haraz’s interactive Tourist Guide Application (TGA) answers user requests with a unique algorithm, allowing travellers to explore independently and fully enjoy their vacation without missing out on the main attractions.

However, the real winners were the APU community members who witnessed this remarkable display of innovative thinking and technical prowess at the 2024 SoC and SoT FYP Showcase.

It was not just an event; it was a lively tapestry woven from passion, dedication, and limitless creativity.

Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Tan Chin Ike, Head of SoC, highlighted that the SoC and SoT FYP Showcase provided a glimpse into a future in which technology and art, rather being competing, collaborated to create a masterpiece.

“We celebrate this success, but we also look forward to building on this momentum,” he said.

“The SoC and SoT FYP Showcase is a cornerstone of the university’s academic calendar, demonstrating its commitment to nurturing innovation and belief in the power of human imagination,” added Assoc. Prof. Dr. Thang Ka Fei, Head of SoT.
