Enlightening Session Explores Neuro-Dramatic-Play and Its Therapeutic Potential
The School of Psychology (SoP) at Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) recently hosted an insightful event titled "Introduction to Neuro-Dramatic-Play (NDP)" on 4th April 2024. Led by Mr Jaff Choong Gian Yong, Lecturer, SoP, the event featured distinguished speaker Prof Dr Sue Jennings, a leading figure in Play Therapy and Dramatherapy in the United Kingdom.
With nearly 40 attendees, the event provided a deep dive into the origins, principles, and therapeutic applications of NDP.
Prof Jennings shed light on the roots of NDP and its profound connection to attachment theory, stressing that attachment processes commence as early as six months before birth.
NDP, an attachment-based play methodology, aims to enhance sensory development, rhythm, embodied experiences, and social interaction among participants.
The presentation by Prof Jennings outlined three fundamental developmental frameworks of NDP:
- Cognitive Development: The crucial role of play in the development of the brain.
- Embodiment-Projection-Role: The dynamic interaction among physical movements, imagination, and engaging in roles.
- Theatre of Resilience: The capacity of NDP to enhance resilience and coping abilities.
A highlight of the event was the discussion on the therapeutic use of literature, with Prof Jennings referencing Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" as a powerful therapeutic story.
Attendees gained practical insights into NDP's application in therapeutic settings through a compelling case study, illustrating its effectiveness in facilitating emotional expression and psychological healing.
Reflecting on the event, Mr Jaff Choong expressed enthusiasm about exploring NDP's transformative potential further, emphasising the importance of innovative approaches in mental health promotion.
