Student club dedicated to promoting sustainable practices – Sustainable Future Fusion (SFF) at Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) – is actively shaping communities through two inspiring initiatives focused on sustainability and digital skill development.
As part of their mission to drive positive change, SFF recently organised events that align with key United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including Quality Education (SDG 4), Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11), Responsible Consumption (SDG 12), Climate Action (SDG 13), and Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17).
On October 23, SFF brought together over 20 students to tackle food waste and promote sustainability at The Lost Food Centre, where they volunteered with The Lost Food Project (TLFP).
Participants engaged in sorting fresh produce for distribution to under-resourced communities, gaining hands-on insights into waste reduction and the value of quality food recovery. Khoo Lay Yang, President of SFF @APU, described the event as “an eye-opening experience that motivates us to take small, impactful steps in supporting those in need”.
The event underscored the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between APU and TLFP, reinforcing their shared dedication to community welfare. Volunteers like Jameel Essa Chuupa and Kimy Mauro Ismael de Sousa expressed gratitude for the chance to make a difference, with Jameel noting, “I’m glad my experience with TLFP opened my eyes to how much food can be saved and used to combat hunger.”
Complementing this initiative, on October 5, SFF hosted a Creative Design and Presentation Skills workshop for 25 refugees and B40 youth aged 11-17, along with teachers from KL Krash Pad (Yayasan Chow Kit).
The session introduced participants to PowerPoint and Canva, equipping them with valuable digital literacy skills to enhance their academic, personal, and future professional pursuits. The session was delivered in Bahasa Malaysia, ensuring accessibility for all participants.
Through this interactive workshop, SFF volunteers, led by Advisor Ms Cynthia Mala Paul Dorairaj, fostered creativity, confidence, and self-expression among young learners.
Participants shared enthusiastic feedback, with Nur Shamirah saying, “I love this programme; it’s so helpful and teaches us things we didn’t know.” Another attendee, Shahrul Sahada, reflected on the skills gained, stating, “This programme is really good because I learned a lot about using PowerPoint and Canva.”
Together, these events showcase SFF and APU’s commitment to impactful social engagement, whether by addressing food security or building digital skills among underserved communities. As it continues to expand its reach, Sustainable Future Fusion remains dedicated to empowering individuals and promoting sustainable practices that contribute to a brighter, more equitable future for all.
