Here’s another good news to share!

Our students from the APU Faculty of Computing, Engineering & Technology (FCET) recently made their name at the first GreenTech Youth Innovation Challenge 2016, which was organised by GreenTech Malaysia, an organization under the purview of the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water (KeTTHA), and Asia School of Business, in conjunction with the International Greentech & Eco Products Exhibition & Conference Malaysia (IGEM) 2016.

Throughout the competition, our team of students, comprising Ngie Kok Sin, John Lim Hong Aun, Lee Jun On and Chan Kar Keng went through 5 stages of challenges, in which they were required to develop a prototype of a product that addresses the world’s environmental sustainability issues. Our students developed the “Intelligent Room System”, which made use of Arduino Nano, Motion & Light Sensors and Solid-state Relay to automate the switch of lights to save electricity.

Eventually, green technology is the future and we are glad that our students are exposed to it prior to their graduation. Congratulations to the team, who was mentored by Vickneswari Durairajah & Suresh Gobee, for this awesome achievement!

We are pleased to share that APU recently hosted the Enterprise Resource Management (ERM) Challenge 2016 – Malaysian Finals on September 17th, 2016 for the Northern and Central Region of Malaysia. The ERM Challenge was based on the SAP Endorsed Monsoon Sim ERP gamification modules, with objectives of equipping students with the necessary skills in using SAP as part of their tools to perform ERM. 12 teams from APU and other private & public universities in Malaysia participated in the challenge, and 3 of APU’s teams were ranked 3rd place, 4th place and 5th place respectively.

The challenge platform was provided by Monsoon Sim , who were represented by their President, Mr Abdy Taminshah and Singapore Director, Mr Alex Ong. Prof. Ron Edwards launched the challenge as inspired the crowd with his opening speech. The event was organised by the School of Accounting, Finance & Quantitative Studies, School of Computing and School of Foundation, represented by Ms Geetha A Rubasundram, Ms Vinothini Kasinathan and Ms  Abbhirami Sivarajan. Special appreciation to Mr Suresh Balasingam, Ms Lai Siew Fong, Ms Nalini Gebril, Mr Mohd Firdaus and to all staff who assisted to make this event a success. Hopefully with more events like this, we are able to ensure that our students are equipped with the necessary knowledge when it comes to industry practice, in which these knowledge are useful in their future career pathways.

With great pride, we would like to share that our student, Hoy Chan Wai from School of Engineering (SoE), was crowned champion at the national finals of the Materials Lecture Competition that was held in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) last week.

The competition saw participation from undergraduate and postgraduate students who came from Malaysian private and public universities. Since 2013, APU students have taken part in the Materials Lecture Competition and had qualified into the National Finals every year. This year, despite the strong competition from other contestants, Chun Wai’s outstanding presentation skills and technical content stood above the rest. Apart from being crowned as the champion of Malaysia’s Material Lecture Competition, Chun Wai was also nominated to represent Malaysia at the Young Persons’ World Lecture Competition (YPWLC) organised by The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3), which will take place in Brazil in October.
 

We are indeed very proud of Chun Wai’s achievement; good job and thumbs up to his mentors, Dr Lai Nai Shyan, Brian Lim Siong Chung, Jacqueline Lukose and Dr Lau Chee Yong, who had assisted and prepared Chun Wai in various areas, such as public speaking, material content and coordination with the Institute of Materials Malaysia (IMM).
 
In addition to the achievement, we are also glad to announce that APU had won the bid to host the 2017 Malaysia IMM MLC Semifinals and Finals at our new campus. It will take place in February 2017 and May 2017 respectively, and will be chaired by Brian Lim Siong Chung from School of Engineering.

We have all waited for this moment of glory! 

Muhammad Alkautsar Sanusi, Abdulhamid Ahmed Ali, Gamma Rizkinata Satriana and Syahmi bin Suleiman, Level 2 students of the BSc (Hons) in Information Technology with a specialism in Mobile Technology and BSc (Hons) in Information Technology with a specialism in Information Systems Security, who represented Asia & Malaysia as one of the Top 3 Finalists at the ATOS IT Challenge 2016 Global Finals, were crowned as 1st Runner Up in Paris, France on the 14th of June 2016. What’s more? They also bagged the Social Media Award, thanks to their active engagement with their followers on the social media.

The team, under the mentorship of Hemalata Vasudavan from the APU School of Technology (SoT), battled through 8 months of planning, research and development of the ‘Go n Gone’ mobile application – an application that allows social media monitoring, filtering and deletion of inappropriate content. It was a remarkable achievement by our undergraduate students, as they competed with other finalists from the UK and France, who were made up of postgraduate & PhD students respectively.

We are delighted to announce that the two teams of students from School of Engineering (SoE) have achieved outstanding results in the recently concluded 27th International Invention, Innovation and Technology Exhibition (ITEX), which was held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC).  In the event, the teams have successfully attained Gold and Silver award.  In addition, the team led by Mr. Alvin Yap Chee Wei has won the special award of the Best Green Invention 2016 Award.  The award aims to recognize the supreme contribution in the field of renewable energy and environmental sustainability, and is awarded to a single invention from over 1,000 local and international participating teams.

The two teams who represented APU at ITEX 2016:

Team No.1 – Gold Award and Best Green Invention 2016 Award
Project Title: ‘Electricity Generation from the Resulting Winds of Passing Trains’

Our performance has improved on year to year basis at ITEX.  In 2015, two teams were sent to the competition, where Gold and Bronze medal were attained.  The achievement this year proves that our student’s work has improved in facing the challenge of the innovation industry.

It was indeed a great achievement and this has once again proven that our students possess qualities that are able to meet industry expectations and standards. Do join us in congratulating the students for their success and thumbs up to their mentors for the guidance!

Two student teams from the School of Computing and Technology (SCT) of Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) were crowned champions of the ‘Forensic Challenge’ and ‘Hack and Defense’ competitions at the recently concluded i-Hack 2016, which took place at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) from 23rd April to 24th April 2016.

The i-Hack 2016 attracted participation from students, practitioners, academicians and security experts from higher education learning institutions, related government bodies, security commissioners and IT professionals in security industry. 

The event was also endorsed by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), F-Secure, Haibro, ITECH Specialist Solutions, Accrete Technologies and Quann Security.
The Forensic Challenge was a 10-hour competition that tested participants’ forensic computing skills through investigations, procedures and final presentation of a forensic report.

Meanwhile, the Hack and Defense challenge was a 8-hour score-based challenge in the ‘Capture the Flag’ format, in which participants competed to attain as many ‘flags’ and ‘coins’ as they can, through solving questions related to cyber security and forensics. 

APU’s Team ‘Sherlock’, comprising Khor Chia Ler, Chan Xin Wei and Soo Jia Cheng, mentored by Sulaiman Harun, attained the championship of the Forensic Challenge whereas team ‘SHA1337’, comprising Nicholas Ian Nonis, Choong Chih Xien and Alexander Sukhamera, mentored by Yusnita Yusof, was crowned champions of the Hack and Defense competition. Both APU teams walked away with a cash prize of RM7,000.
On the other hand, APU’s team ‘Nachos’, comprising Mohamed Siddiq Rahmat, Toong Chee Sheng and Syahmi bin Suleiman, mentored by Nor Azlina Abdul Rahman, also bagged the 2nd Runner Up of the Hack and Defense competition and walked away with a cash prize of RM1,000.

The teams of students who participated in the competition are students from APU’s School of Computing and Technology (SCT). With a proud track record and history of producing highly competent graduates in Computing going back to its origins as APIIT, APU’s School of Computing & Technology today provides offers pre-university, undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Computing, IT, Software Engineering, Computer Science as well as in in the fields of Information Technology, highly specialised areas such as Cyber Security, Forensic Computing, Database Administration, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Big Data, Mobile Technology and more. 

For the third time in a row, APU’s student is awarded the prestigious Institute of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Award. Andrew Teh Boon Kheng received the award in conjunction with the 57th IEM Annual Dinner, which was held on Saturday, 16 April 2016. The Gold Medal from IEM is awarded to the best overall final year Engineering student in a local institution of higher learning.

The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) was established in 1959 and its primary function is to promote and advance the science and profession of engineering in any or all of its disciplines and to facilitate the exchange of information and ideas related to engineering. Membership of IEM is currently about 28,000, making it one of the largest professional organization in the country. 
 
Andrew is currently employed as an Sales & Application Engineer at KEYENCE Sdn Bhd. KEYENCE is an innovative leader in the development and manufacturing of industrial automation and inspection equipment worldwide. Their products consist of code readers, laser markers, machine vision systems, measuring systems, microscopes, sensors, and static eliminators.
 
Having achieved this award 3 years running is a result from the strength of the engineering curriculum offered and the dedication of the academicians who have constantly delivered sound technical knowledge to all APU engineering students. We look forward to hear more success storied from our students and from the industry. Keep up the good work!

It is with great pride we announce that APU students from the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Technology (FCET) excelled in the International Energy Innovation Competition (EiC), which was organised by the Institute of Engineers Singapore (IES). 3 of our APU teams qualified as the finalists of the competition; and stood above the rest, as all three teams were placed the First Runner Up, 4th Place and Finalist respectively. 

Held in Suntec Exhibition Centre in parallel with the 2015 World Engineers Summit, the Energy Innovation Challenge attracted participation of teams from Singapore, China, Australia, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia. Despite having stiff competition from their fellow competitors, the APU teams impressed the judges with their innovative ideas and outstanding presentation. APU Team A, which comprised Cleopatra Musa and Syed Abdullah, integrated fitness with eco-friendly technology to produce the “Eco-Friendly Weight Lifting Machine”. Their innovative prototype outstood other teams; as they bagged the First Runner Up position and walked away with a cash prize of S$ 5,000 and a trophy! 

Whether in a team or individually, our students performed marvelously, as Jasmine Kaur, who fought alone with strong determination in Team C, walked away as the 4th Place winner, with her innovative solution – “Eco-Friendly Ceiling Fan as an Alternative Approach to Air-Conditioners”. On the other hand, Breena Theseira and Choon Yun Lim, who were from Team B, qualified into the grand finals with their project, “Infinite Loop”.

All 3 teams were mentored by Prof Dr Ir Vinesh Thiruchelvam, Dean of Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Technology (FCET). These achievements have proven that our students are able to perform astonishing results, both locally and internationally. It was a great platform for the students to showcase their talents at the international level; moreover, they had the honourable opportunity to receive the prizes from Singaporean Minister for Education, Mr Heng Swee Keat!

Despite the punishing heat, humid weather and stiff competition from other colleges & universities, the APU Netball team secured a 2nd runner-up position at the 2015 Majlis Sukan Institusi Pengajian Tinggi (MASISWA) Netball Competition, held at the Lee Chong Wei Sports Arena, Bukit Serdang from 18 April to 19 April 2015.

In demonstrating fantastic teamwork and outstanding perseverance, the 12 member team fought through the preliminary rounds to the semi-finals before securing the 2nd runner-up position. Kudos to the team for their competitve spirit and and many thanks to the Club’s coach, Ms Zabedah and the Club’s advisor, Ms Audrey Linda Fernando who dedicated much effort in managing and training the APU team.

We are pleased to share that students from Asia Pacific University Model United Nations Club (APUMUN) participated at the Sunway Model United Nations Conference from the 19th to 21st June 2015 and stood out as award winning delegates in various categories. 

Aiman Hoque won the Best Delegate Award for the Ancient Roman Senate. Aiman and delegates from other universities and international schools were introduced to the Roman Republic system. As a member of the Roman Senate during the 218BC, Aiman managed to lead the Roman Empire and come up with strategies to win the 2nd Punic War against Carthage.

Muhammad Ali won the Most Outstanding Delegate for the Palestinian- Israeli Joint Council for Peace where he came up with brilliant resolutions and managed to find allies from other nations to solve the problems that Palestine and Israel have been facing for decades.

Kevin Andgreas was awarded the honourable mention title for the United Nations General Assembly.  The United Nations General Assembly, the most versatile of councils, required delegates to tackle a wide variety of pressing global issues with far-reaching implications such as climate change and how to reduce its effects in the future. Kevin exhibited his debating skills and managed to get other countries to vote for more environmental policies to be introduced around the world to reduce the effects of climate change.

Kevin Andgreas also won the best delegate award at the TENBY MUN conference which was held on the 13th and 14th of June. He won the best delegate award for the UN Security Council where he was able to negotiate and de-escalate tensions to avert a nuclear disaster by respecting and working together with other nations.
