3 Times The Success

APU Teams Stand Proudly on the National Engineers Day Stage in Singapore

Once again, we stand in pride on the world stage, for our students’ outstanding performances and amazing capability!

In conjunction with the National Engineers Day (NED) of Singapore, the Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES) hosted the 5th installment of the Engineering Innovation Challenge (EIC) with the theme of designing and building a prototype of a portable and sensitive ionizing radiation detector that is capable of detecting background radiation. At the Challenge, we are proud to share that 3 of our teams from the School of Engineering walked away with Merit Prizes, bagging SGD1,000 each as well as a prototype fund of SGD500 per team.

The teams were the only Malaysian teams to be in the grand finals and to walk away with awards; their hard work and passion accompanied by the dedication of their mentors contributed to their successes. Kudos to the mentoring lecturers: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lai Nai Shyan, Dr. Freddy Tan Kheng Suan & Dr. Lau Chee Yong from our School of Engineering for the dedicated effort!

Huge Congratulations the teams, comprising:

Team 1: A Low-Cost IoT Based Background Radiation Monitoring System
Project Advisor: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lai Nai Shyan
Team Member: Darren Chin Vui Ket & Thea Sze Sien

Team 2: Low-Cost and Portable Ionizing Radiation Detector
Project Advisor: Dr. Freddy Tan Kheng Suan
Team Members: Mohamed Mafaz Mohamed Ahsan, Lim Eng Wei & Akshey Kumar Magenthiran

Team 3: RadioAppTive - background radiation detector
Project Advisor: Dr. Lau Chee Yong

Not only did APU teams made us proud, but they also successfully proved to the world that we are capable of producing talents in Engineering that adhere to the world’s standards. While we record our highest appreciation and congratulations to the teams, we also wish they excel as outstanding engineers who can contribute to the nation’s growth & development as they graduate!

Harvesting Success - APU Team Bags Merit Award at Singaporean Energy Innovation Challenge (EIC)

Here comes another award in our bag!

We are delighted to share that our APU team of students from the School of Engineering (SoE) achieved outstanding results in the recently concluded Energy Innovation Challenge (EIC), that was held in Toa Payoh, Singapore in the last week of July.

The challenge was jointly organised by the Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES) and Science Centre Singapore with the support of the Ministry of Education, the Energy Market Authority (EMA) and the National Research Foundation (NRF) Singapore. It is an annual event held in conjunction with the National Engineers Day (NED); this year, the challenge saw participation from 24 teams around the world, including 3 teams from Malaysia.

APU team, comprising Ngie Kok Sin, John Lim Hong Aun, Naqibullah Mohammadullah & Wong Xi Jun, emerged as the only Malaysian team who won an award. They attained the 4th place and the Merit Award by proposing an innovative energy solution, titled “Kinetic Energy Harvester on Bicycle”. The team worked on the project under the guidance of their academic mentors, Ms. Vickneswari Durairajah and Mr. Suresh Gobee from the School of Engineering (SoE).

Just like how the Malaysian athletes make us proud at the Olympic Games, our APU students made us proud at the international arena as well! Congratulations and thumbs up to the team and their mentors for their effort!

APU Shines at International Arena

It is with great pride we announce that APU students from the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Technology (FCET) excelled in the International Energy Innovation Competition (EiC), which was organised by the Institute of Engineers Singapore (IES). 3 of our APU teams qualified as the finalists of the competition; and stood above the rest, as all three teams were placed the First Runner Up, 4th Place and Finalist respectively.

Held in Suntec Exhibition Centre in parallel with the 2015 World Engineers Summit, the Energy Innovation Challenge attracted participation of teams from Singapore, China, Australia, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia. Despite having stiff competition from their fellow competitors, the APU teams impressed the judges with their innovative ideas and outstanding presentation. APU Team A, which comprised Cleopatra Musa and Syed Abdullah, integrated fitness with eco-friendly technology to produce the “Eco-Friendly Weight Lifting Machine”. Their innovative prototype outstood other teams; as they bagged the First Runner Up position and walked away with a cash prize of S$ 5,000 and a trophy!

Whether in a team or individually, our students performed marvelously, as Jasmine Kaur, who fought alone with strong determination in Team C, walked away as the 4th Place winner, with her innovative solution – “Eco-Friendly Ceiling Fan as an Alternative Approach to Air-Conditioners”. On the other hand, Breena Theseira and Choon Yun Lim, who were from Team B, qualified into the grand finals with their project, “Infinite Loop”.

All 3 teams were mentored by Prof Dr Ir Vinesh Thiruchelvam, Dean of Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Technology (FCET). These achievements have proven that our students are able to perform astonishing results, both locally and internationally. It was a great platform for the students to showcase their talents at the international level; moreover, they had the honourable opportunity to receive the prizes from Singaporean Minister for Education, Mr Heng Swee Keat!
